What makes the CYMA AKS-74U unique?

Aside from being a short and compact airsoft AK, this gun sports very nice externals at a great price. While the internals is okay, easily hitting targets out to 125 feet, it is a great compromise between price & external build quality that elevate this airsoft gun from others.

This is about what we can expect for a CYMA product: great externals with reasonable internals at an affordable price point. This marks their reputation as a great entry level airsoft brand.

External

This gun comes with a full metal receiver, barrel, and folding stock that is very well put together. There is almost no flex or wobbliness from the muzzle break to the end of the buttstock. Even folded, the gun FEELS rock solid.

The hop up adjustment is located behind the fake bolt. Just pull back on the handle to reveal the sliding tab. The sliding tab just needs to be moved to the rear to apply more hop. You can expect .20g BB’s to fly around 160-180 feet in distance. Check out our range tests further down below.

The Version 3 gearbox is not bad at all with mostly plastic compression parts and an M120 spring. We’re generally impressed with CYMA gears, and this one is no exception.

The AK-style hop up unit is about what you’d expect: classic nub and rubber bucking. We do rather enjoy the sliding tab over the usual dials more commonly seen in the AR15 style of airsoft guns.

Lastly, the brass 6.08mm inner barrel is 280mm long, which is to say it is VERY short. You could, theoretically, install a longer barrel and a new barrel shroud for some more distance (although be sure to install an appropriately vented cylinder if you do so).

Honestly, it’s fairly standard and meets expectations for a $200 airsoft gun.

How has it held up after 1,500 rounds? Pretty decent actually. We ensured that our motor height was good to go before really taking it to the field. It shoots about as well as it did when we first bought it years ago.

Magazine

Note that the magazine is less “banana” shaped than the AK47/AKM magazines.

We both love and hate AK style airsoft magazines. On one hand, they have a HUGE capacity (600 rounds in this case), and on the other hand they are prone to wobbling, especially side to side. Periodically, if you’re supporting against a rock or door frame, the magazine will misfeed.

We found a magwell grip often solves this issue, but it would be better if it wasn’t a problem

Battery Compartment

The battery compartment is located on the top, and it is tight squeeze, even for the intended 8.4v NiMH stick batteries. We found that many smaller 7.4v LiPo batteries don’t fit in this compartment, either.

Personally, we used this specific 11.1v LiPo (which can void the warranty due to how strong the battery is, as the higher 11.1v will burn out contacts faster). We did try to use it with an 8.4v NiMH battery… and it disappointed us.

As you can see, there isn’t much space at all for your battery. However, one nice thing about the AKS74U line is that the dust cover is connected via hinge, so it snaps shut more securely than the normal dust cover.

We prefer the higher performance of the stronger LiPo batteries, and are more than willing to do fixes ourselves. If you don’t want the extra wear and tear, then consider a 7.4v LiPo battery instead, as we’re fairly certain a 9.6v NiMH stick won’t fit.

We put this AEG through the paces and are aiming to determine the following:

• Average RPS (rounds per second) also known as the rate of fire

Accuracy at combat distances

We chose 75 feet and 125 feet as our standard combat distances typically seen by airsoft players. The gun is accurate enough within 75 feet that you should be able to hit anything you want.

We gauged the groupings by measuring the distance between the two furthest shots in a single group. Each group was done with 8 shots in semi auto.

It’s pretty clear that the short barrel affects the effective range of this airsoft gun. By 125 feet you’re starting to lose the ability to place hits on man-sized targets. Granted, the wind did seem to affect our got placements.

In our opinion, one of the first upgrades you’d want is for accuracy. I’m sure stabilizing the inner barrel & getting a flat-hop & high quality bucking would do wonders for effective range.

Rate of Fire Testing (RPS)

Sometimes you just need accuracy through firepower, right? In a world where a single BB is all it takes – just flinging hundreds of them at the target is just what you need.

We don’t need to include a set of tables for this one as on an 11.1V battery we were consistently getting 23 Rounds per second. This is good enough, as far as we’re concerned, especially for an entry level airsoft gun.

FPS Consistency

We often test for FPS consistency since it tells us how tuned the air compression is. We did not open the gearbox yet for this test, so this is one factory stock numbers:

What we found was that the FPS variance after doing a full magazine dump was quite decent. The lowest FPS we saw on our chronograph was 396 FPS on .20 BB’s. The highest we recorded was 402 FPS. That is less than a 10 FPS difference, which is not too bad in our opinion.

Should you buy the CYMA AKS-74U?

If you’re in the market for an AK and you’re not terribly concerned with getting the best performance for every dollar, then this is going to be a GREAT buy. The sheer FUN factor of using this “bad guy” gun cannot be understated.

We do have one recommendation: If you can afford the extra $20, we do recommend going with the CM045A version of this gun instead of the CM035A. The CM045A has pre-upgraded internals making the gun perform just a bit better.

However, if you end up with the CM035A we’re certain that you’ll, like many other airsoft players, have loads of fun playing with it.

Shooting Performance

The best airsoft gun should have:

• Consistent Muzzle Velocity – the standards we want to hit are +/- 20 FPS variance in 3 rounds bursts. 
• Decent accuracy at combat distances – we should see hits on a man-sized target at 25 yards easily.
• Adjustable hop up & high quality bucking – this is key to a consistent flight path on the BB.

Reliability

When you pull the trigger, a good airsoft gun should fire without fail.

• Full metal construction – while not a requirement – a full metal gun has a tendency to be more resistant to drop damage than a plastic one.
• It will work under tough circumstances – can this airsoft pistol function under high/low temperatures? How about a bit of sand or dirt, does that affect the function?
• Precision internal construction – precisely built internal parts help ensure that the airsoft pistol will cycle properly.

Internal Build Quality

The internals of a gun should be made of great materials and assembled in a precise way.

• High-quality bucking – the bucking is the main object touching your BB before you fire your gun, it is important that it is of the highest quality.
• Solid hop up – the hop-up unit should be adjustable and the adjustment shouldn’t move by itself while firing the gun.
• Rubber seals are good – good gas efficiency is reliant on solid seals.
• Smooth inner barrel – the inner barrel should be smooth and the crowning should be flawless.
• Well-designed air nozzle – the air nozzle should seal very well in the hop up unit.

The externals should be well constructions and gets extra points for:

• Cocking serrations – cuts made into the slide to increase friction on your fingers. This means you can rack the pistol more easily (although with airsoft, it’s quite easy to rack your slide).
• Comfortable grip – the pistol grip itself should feel good in your hands. We expect excellent ergonomics, but luckily since these guns are replicas of the real deal, they’re going to be pretty good here.
• Tactical rail – you’ll be able to attach accessories like lasers, flashlights, and more.
• Iron sights – the front and rear sights should be easy to acquire and be rock solid during use. 

Value

What you buy should be worth the money being spent.

• Performance to cost ratio – the high overall performance of the airsoft pistol, the better.
• Features to cost ratio – we’re looking for more features for every dollar spent..
• Customer Service of the Manufacturer – The manufacturer’s warranty and customer service reputation should be good to ensure that IF you receive a lemon, it’ll be covered.

It’s hard not to make a list of the “best airsoft guns” without including at least one CYMA AK. In this case, we chose the AKS74U line. It’s hard not to have loads of fun with this gun.

With a beefy receiver & fair decent performing internals, the CYMA line of AK is legendary. There’s a reason we considered them one of the best beginner airsoft brands.

Personally, we dropped an 11.1v LiPo in, folded the stock, and just went hog wild with this AK. We don’t recommend doing it too (unless you enjoy voiding your warranty), but it is some of the most fun we’ve had playing airsoft.

Wow. For well over 10 years we were using KWA LM4’s as our gas blow back rifle of choice.

Then Tokyo Marui came along and innovated further.

The ZET/MWS system is as modern as it gets with gas blow back rifles. There are numerous small features in the bolt that ensures maximum gas efficiency and sealing between the air nozzle & the hop-up unit, which is a common reason why you get inconsistent FPS on other GBBR’s.

G&G Combat Machine Review – The Workhorse of Beginner Airsoft Loadouts

G&G Combat Machine is the most commonly recommended starter AEG for a reason.

G&G airsoft guns are generally considered to be some of the best on the market and are known for their high build quality and reliable performance. So, we wanted to do a Combat Machine review.

I’ve played well over 1000 airsoft games and I’ve spent a good 50+ playing with G&G Combat Machine. Let me tell you: their Combat Machine CM16 line of AEG is a big workhorse of the entire industry. Go to your local field and randomly pick out an airsoft M4, and chances are, it’s a Combat Machine

In fact, it is one of the best airsoft gun for beginners.

The CM16 was one of the first AEG’s to feature the nylon fiber receivers. This was a HUGE upgrade compared to the more common, at the time, ABS plastic bodies.

We’re going to be reviewing this venerable workhorse of the airsoft industry. Does it hold up nowadays? Is it still a good entry level gun? Read our G&G Combat Machine Review and find out.

What makes the G&G Combat Machine unique?

That’s the neat part. It isn’t.

What do I mean by this?

As described earlier – it is the workhorse of the airsoft industry. Many new players come into the game with a G&G Combat Machine. We often recommended it back when I worked at one of the major Southern California airsoft stores. G&G is well known for making a wide variant of great airsoft guns.

The reason is rather simple: It just works.

And it works at a great price as well. It hit that perfect balance between performance, durability, and cost. Most new players come in with a budget of around $150 – $200 for a new airsoft gun. At the time I was working in the industry, a new 9.6v Nunchuck NiMH battery, a smart charger, and a CM16 Combat Machine ran exactly $200.

G&G Combat Machine Raider CQB Variant – Tan

Features and Benefits

The Combat Machine is an AEG (automatic electric gun) and it come in two major configurations: the standard variant and the Raider variant. Additionally, they both come in the short barrel and long barrel forms. I will go over all kinds below.

Material & Construction

As mentioned earlier, the G&G Combat Machines were one of the first AEG’s to come with nylon fiber receivers. This included the rail system on the raider variant as well.

The nylon fibers were simply far more sturdy compared to the ABS plastic bodies at the time. In fact, most beginner guns now are made of this nylon fiber, copying what G&G did.

This gun is metal where it matters, however. The V2 gearbox, the barrel, and the buffer tube, are all full metal.

The construction is so sturdy you could do pushups on it!

External

The main thing to know about the polymer construction of nylon fiber was that it balances sturdiness with weight. Coming in at around 4.6 lbs, this is, once again, why it’s a good choice for beginners.

Plastic vs Metal Receivers

A common question we get is: are plastic bodies ever better than metal?

It depends on what kind of metal receivers are compared to. Are they better than pot-metal receivers in lesser reputable brands? Yes. Absolutely yes.

However, compared to any reputable company’s metal receiver?

The truth is: they aren’t, at least in the terms of durability & performance. However – they differ greatly when it comes to cost. plastic receivers allow an airsoft gun to be sold more cheaply. In the case of the G&G Combat Machine, it is clear that G&G chose to go a little cheaper on the body so they can maintain GOOD internals.

Standard Combat Machine vs Raider

There are two main packages when it comes to the CM16. They are the standard variants and the raider variants. They are alike in many ways and different in others. Let’s start with the similarities:

• Same internals – the performance isn’t going to differ between them.
• Polymer receivers
• Outer Barrels
• Safety selectors
• Pistol grip

Here is where they are different:

• Combat Machine Carbine (The Standard Version) – this variant doesn’t come with a rail system. Instead, it uses the classic M4A1 carbine length handguards. Additionally, this gun is front wired. This means that typically the standard CM16 fits a larger battery because it goes into the handguard. Next, it uses a more classic collapsible stock. Lastly, it comes with a removable M4A1 style carry handle.
• Combat Machine Raider (The Railed Version) – this variant comes with a quad rail system made of nylon fiber. This means that the fun has to be wired to the rear. Additionally, this means it comes with a crane stock (which is arguably more ergonomic than the standard stock). Lastly, it comes with removable cut-off A2-style rear sights.

Generally speaking, you’ll find the raider AEG more expensive as well. We’ve broken down the differences in the table below:

CQB Length vs Long Length

In addition to the standard and raider variants, there’s also the Long and CQB variants.

• Long – this variant comes with a standard M4 14.5 inch outer barrel. In addition, the inner barrel measures 357mm (which is slightly between the usual 363mm on other airsoft M4’s).
• CQB – this variant comes with a shortened 10.5 inch outer barrel. The inner barrel is also shortened to 275mm (which is shorter than the usual 300mm found on other CQB length M4’s).

The FPS difference between these two lengths is negligible. The only thing I’ve noticed when test-firing the two is that the CQB variants seem to have slightly less consistency between shots, but it hardly matters are combat ranges.

Hop Up Adjustment

The hop up adjustment wheel is located in the same place as any Tokyo Marui style M4 AEG. However, there’s one gripe we have about the CM16 line: Their dust covers are spring-loaded in the closed position.

For those of us without long fingernails (aka ME), it can be a bit of a pain to actually adjust the hop up. We’re not sure why G&G chose to build them this way.

You have to hold down the dust cover. This is backwards in my opinion.

Internal

Internally, the Combat Machine features a full metal, zinc alloy 8mm gearbox. Everything from the cylinder, air nozzle, piston head, gears, wiring, and piston are all good.

It basically “meets standard” – 10+ years ago it was phenomenal at its original price point. Now? It’s what other entry-level guns try to hit (and aren’t always successful in doing so).

One of the coolest things is that this gearbox has all the aftermarket support you could ask for – so any future upgrades you could want are basically compatible with this gun. The world is your oyster here.

Magazine Construction

The main standout of the included G&G magazine is that it has a capacity of 450 rounds. Outside of that, it is a fairly standard high-capacity AEG M4 magazine that requires users to wind a wheel at the bottom of the mag.

It clearly shows that G&G was thinking about the beginner with this BB capacity.

The magazine does come longer than a standard 350 round high-cap, but it’s not too noticeable.

The last thing I’d like to say about the G&G magazine is that they feed into nearly EVERY airsoft gun I’ve used it on. That’s pretty awesome I’d have to say.

Performance Testing

We put this AEG through the paces and are aiming to determine the following:

• Average shot placement at combat distances
• Average RPS (rounds per second) also known as the rate of fire
• FPS Consistency

The following are the parameters of our testing:

• Stock G&G Combat Machine (Raider variant)
• Stock G&G 450 round high cap
• Maintenance performed included cleaning the hop up unit, inner barrel, and bucking.
• Adjusted the hop up as close as we could to point of aim, point of impact at 75 feet.
• 71 degrees temperature
• Outside range with little wind
• 0.25g BBs (Elite Force Brand)
• Actionunion Airsoft Chronograph E9800-X (Our Matrix Chrono broke)

Accuracy at combat distances

We chose 75 feet and 125 feet as our standard combat distances typically seen by airsoft players. The gun is accurate enough within 75 feet that you should be able to hit anything you want.

We gauged the groupings by measuring the distance between the two furthest shots in a single group. Each group was done with 8 shots in semi auto.

The G&G Combat Machine is respectable in terms of combat accuracy. By 125 feet you can tell that spherical projectiles fire at 380 FPS have started really losing speed and their backspin. This isn’t mind-blowing accuracy, but you will hit man-sized targets at combat ranges.

Rate of Fire Testing (RPS)

Sometimes you just need accuracy through firepower, right? In a world where a single BB is all it takes – just flinging hundreds of them at the target is just what you need.

We don’t need to include a set of tables for this one as on a 9.6V battery we were consistently getting 13 Rounds per second. Respectable, but nothing to write home about.

FPS Consistency

We often test for FPS consistency since it tells us how tuned the air compression is. To be honest, we usually open our gearboxes not long after purchase and tune it up ourselves. However, since a significant other picked up a new combat machine, we had a chance to test the stock capabilities.

What we found was that the FPS variance after doing a full magazine dump was not too bad. The lowest FPS we saw on our chronograph was 376 FPS on .20 BB’s. The highest we recorded was 383 FPS. That is less than a 10 FPS difference, which is not too bad in our opinion.

Once again, G&G’s AEG performs fine. Nothing amazing, but it gets the job done clearly.

It has enough out-of-the-box performance at a great price point to be considered on any “best starter airsoft gun” list. Additionally, the internal parts are so universal that nearly all Version 2 upgrade fits in this gun. This makes it a perfect upgrade platform for those who end up loving airsoft like we do.

If you have the money, however, go for the raider variant as having rails is awesome and so is having the airsoft gun being rear wired.

What do you gain? You can now better tactically feel your way around your airsoft gun and equipment while still getting a lot of knuckle protection.

What do you lose? Protection near your fingertips. It does suck to get shot there, but the tradeoff might be worth it.

Lastly, it is inexpensive – great for players on a meager budget. In our opinion, we prefer these over the full-finger variant, generally.

How to Stop Airsoft Googles from Fogging – What Decades of Airsoft Shows

The #1 complaint about airsoft goggles is fogging. We’ll tell you how you can prevent foggy goggles below:

One of the biggest problems for airsoft players is fogging. Many players complain of missing shots or not seeing the enemy because their goggles fogged up.

While one way to avoid the fogging issue would be to buy goggles with a special coating to prevent it, these are often expensive. So, it stands to reason that not everyone will want to pay top dollar for a pair of goggles. 

Fortunately, there are various ways to prevent fog from building up in your airsoft goggles. There are some things you can do to prevent fogging, and these will not cost you a lot of money either. 

In this article, we’ll go through some of the best, tested and true methods of preventing the build-up of fog in your goggles. These same tips apply whether you’re wearing an airsoft goggle or paintball mask.

What Causes your Goggles To Become Foggy?

To address the problem, we need to know what causes it in the first place. The main reason why your goggles become foggy is due to condensation. This is when warm water vapors hit a cool surface (aka your goggles). The result is a mist or fog that is white or transparent. 

Gas molecules contain the most energy, so when they touch a cool surface like the lenses of your goggles, they lose a lot of that energy. When this happens, the molecules start to slow down and change from gas to liquid. That’s why it is mainly your breath that causes the goggles from fogging because it is warmer than the environment you’re playing in.

These issues below are common reasons why your eyepro is fogging:

• High humidity
• Googles are too tight and there isn’t enough airflow
• Sweat dripping from foam
• Moist breathing works its way up into the goggles

Even antifog airsoft goggles can still fog up or become less effective over time because the antifog layer can come off after enough wipes.

Below we have 7 tips to follow. Some are DIY while other require buying a product.

1.) Wipe Off Your Goggles Using Dishwashing Soap

The best way to prevent fogging is to simply wipe off the lenses after a game. Dish soap is a great choice. It’s inexpensive, and it creates a thin layer that blocks fogging. Apply a little inside your goggles, and then wipe off the excess with a rag or microfiber cloth.

2.) Use An Anti-Fogging Spray

Anti fogging sprays work – at least for a short time.

These are easily applied inside the goggles and eliminate fogging during the game. You can use these sprays during the pre-game process. Once applied, they’ll work well to prevent fogging.

The main drawback to these is that they cost money, but fortunately, only a few dollars at best. Also, you will need to reapply periodically, especially if you accidentally touch the inside of the goggle while you’re off the field.

We’ve previously used these “quick spit” antifog sprays and have had great success. We recommend it as part of a beginner airsoft loadout.

3.) Use Anti-Fog Wipes

Separate from the antifog sprays are the antifog wipes. This particular set of wipes by Revision work pretty damn well and are easier to pack on your person than the sprays.

These wipes aren’t cheap, but they do work very well and sometimes the convenience of storing them is better than keeping a spray on you.

Tip: be sure to bring along a ziplock-type bag after you open one as you’ll want to reuse it a few times before throwing it away.

4.) Using Shaving Cream

This is another tried and tested DIY solution. Simply apply shaving cream to the inside of your goggles. Alternatively, you can also use baby shampoo or dish soap to prevent fogging. 

If you are going to use shaving cream, make sure it is good old-fashioned shaving cream and not shaving gel. The cream will have to be mixed with water to form a solution. You can then dip the goggles into the solution or wipe them down. Then let it air dry before using the goggles.

5.) Use Baby Shampoo

This is actually a tip we picked up from a swimmer. You can just drop in baby shampoo and then buff it down with a towel. Simple!

6.) Using Human Saliva 

Yes, we know it’s disgusting, and for this reason, it may not be for everyone. So, while the above methods work, a free and easy solution is to spit on your goggles. It’s a simple way to solve the problem in the short term, but it doesn’t work in the long run.

A better solution is to buy goggles with better ventilation. You can then coat them with soap or toothpaste to prevent fogging. 

Many people use saliva on their glasses, and it works perfectly. The exact science behind why saliva works as well as a defogging solution is something we don’t know. However, why not test it out to see if it works for you before spending money on expensive commercial defogging products.

7.) Purchase a Fan

Some of the more expensive goggles frames, like those provided by revision, include a fan component. Not only does this keep your eyes cool, but it also helps prevent fogging. However, they’re typically way more expensive and are usually not included with the goggle frame itself.

We interviewed players who have used the fan, and they reported that it makes a HUGE difference in both antifog and their wallet contents.

These solutions should work for most people, so you should try them out. The trick is to find the solution that works best for you and your airsoft goggles.

If none of the above methods work for you, invest in special goggles with a defogging coating. These goggles aren’t cheap but will last you for years, and that means years of not having to try and spot the enemy in dense goggle fog!

Remember that your airsoft goggle is one of the most important pieces of safety gear for airsoft. So, take care of it and it will take care of you.

FAQ

Should I try mesh goggles? They don’t fog right?

While you could purchase mesh goggles, we certainly DO NOT recommend them.

Mesh goggles won’t fog, but are far more likely to be shattered or shatter an airsoft BB on impact. Your eyes are worth more, so we don’t recommend these at all.

What should I if my goggles are fogging in the middle of my airsoft game?

While it sucks to do this; if your goggles are fogging so heavily you cannot see, you need to ask someone to walk you off the field. DO NOT attempt to wipe off the goggles midgame.

Removing your goggles on the field is incredibly dangerous resulting in an airsoft BB where it doesn’t belong.

Even if you want to put in a single finger to wipe off the goggle, trust us, you don’t want to do it.

Even a finger wipe just makes the interior of the goggle messier resulting in further fogging. You’ll have a lot of airsoft games in this hobby, so just get in contact with a ref to escort you off the field.

Your Gear List – AKA the easy stuff

This is the meat of how to pack for a Milsim event:

Making a list of the equipment needed to deal with this type of event is not easy at all: the type and amount of gear to bring with you hardly depend on the role you are going to play. Nevertheless, it is generally good practice to bring some basic gear with you:

How to pack for a Milsim Event: Basic Gear

• Water and food rations: being long-duration events, it is always a good idea to have some rations with you to stay hydrated and “recharge your batteries”. Depending on your food choices, you may need a way to heat it up as well.
• Mess kit: how did you plan to eat your meals? Pack utensils, cups, and bowls if needed.
• Lenses for different types of glasses: operating for long periods, it is possible that you will have to operate in different brightness conditions. Better not to find yourself with dark glasses when the sun goes down.
• Extra clothes: what is true for light conditions is also true for weather conditions. It is best to have some dry clothes, waterproof equipment, and spare underwear with you. Finding yourself operating in wet, broken, or otherwise compromised clothing for long periods can easily become a serious problem. A more comprehensive list looks like this:
  • Additional base layers like thermals pants or shirts
  • Spare socks & underwear
  • Cold weather layers
  • Head wear
  • A weather-resistant bag to keep all of this in.
• Medicines and medikits: If you are away from civilization for long periods of time, make sure you have all the medicines you normally need, plus a small medikit for yourself and your teammates. This medkit may include bugsprays and wet wipes as well.
• Extra batteries: having extra batteries with you can always come in handy: dots, flashlights, radios, AEGs… a lot of our equipment runs on batteries.
• Utility knife and tapes: they always come in handy. They can be used for modifications, adjustments and emergency repairs. Tapes include: fast “duct” tape and electric tape.
• Identification: this includes your photo ID and any medical cards.

How to pack for a Milsim Event: Auxillary Gear

For all the rest of the equipment, as already mentioned, use common sense, and adjust according to the needs of the operation and the role you are going to play. Always carry safety equipment (goggles, red light, whistle, emergency blanket, and medkit), and rely on your role to decide the rest.

Mental Preparation:

Most MILSIM events have an average duration of around 24 / 72 hours. This means that for the whole duration of the event, you will play a defined airsoft role.

Now, the heart of the simulation is the correct impersonation of your role: this means in the first place that you have to understand what you are going to do.

The first thing to do is consult the book of the event (like the Milsim West TACSOP). Review the briefings reserved for your team or your category of players. This will provide you with the basic knowledge to understand what role you’re going to play, and in what context. This is essential to structure your identity. This also helps to establish the behavioral lines to keep during the event.

Get comfortable with roleplaying

Let’s use the example of roleplaying a member of a SWAT team. You will need to consider that you must adhere to the chain of command of your unit. Think about what kind of equipment you will have to use, and learn about the rules of engagements.

You will have to try to think, as much as possible, as an officer in this situation.

It will be logical to ask yourself questions such as: “If I shoot someone, will I be subject to consequences? If I disobey an order, will something happen to me? What about my comrades?” and so on.

Similarly, if you were to play as a narco / gang member, you would have to assess the situation. Have I decided to surrender? If so, what am I risking? Have I decided to commit crime by choice or am I forced against my will? What do I risk if I am caught collaborating with the police? And if I torture someone, what happens?

In short, the rule is, “If I were in this situation, what would I do?”

The hardest thing to do is to give an honest answer to that question. It requires a lot of practice.

Physical Preparation:

In Milsim, the type of tasks to be performed and roles that you play will require different levels of physical effort. That said, you should expect to be physical if you truly wish to be proficient.

More physical fitness decreases stress and ensures you can perform while on the field.

You should be prepared for the following types of situations:

• Common situations – regardless of the type of role you take, you should expect to patrol or even simply stand for long periods. It may seem trivial, but these are things that not everyone is used to.
• Frequent situations – in some cases, greater physical efforts may be required. It may be that you have to carry ballasts, walk long distances, load and unload equipment, or sprint from cover to cover. Most good airsoft tactics require some degree of physical fitness.
• Borderline situations – there are also cases in which even higher physical efforts are required. Walking continuously for many hours and with heavy loads, perhaps with only a few hours of sleep, climbing slopes, crawling for long distances, running, and carrying heavy weights. These tasks tend to be performed by those who impersonate raiders and special forces operators, or in any case roles of personnel who must operate autonomously and perform extremely difficult tasks.

To prepare for these types of events, it is best to start as soon as you decide to participate.

Some exercises that may come in handy:

• Running: sprinting is a type of skill that can be very useful in the most adrenaline-filled moments of the simulations. Knowing how to move quickly from cover to cover can sometimes make the difference between success and failure.
• Marching: marching, also known as rucking, for long periods and with more or less heavy loads can certainly be useful. It is very common among all units and can be very tiring, if you are not accustomed. You can vary a lot on the weight, depending on the type of role to play, but as general rule, it would be good to get used to facing distances of several tens of kilometers, on slopes.
• Cardio: jumping rope, jumping jacks, jogging, and similar exercises are essential to understand how to react to fatigue. It can also increase awareness of your limits and improve your breathing for crucial shots.
• Pull-ups: in some situations, you may have to climb over obstacles or structures. Being able to lift yourself is a good starting point to succeed in these tasks without losing the ability to operate. A good base can be 5 pull-ups, but ideally, you should be able to lift yourself with some weight on you (10 kilos is a good goal);
• Plank and movement on all fours: Going prone and crawling is another situation that isn’t uncommon. In some cases, you may need to move while staying low and you need to have good core strength to do so. You can try crawling for some distance using the belly-crawl technique.
• Use of the rifle: often, one of the first things that players experience, is the pain in the shoulders and arms, due to the continuous use of the airsoft gun. The most convenient thing is to get used to brandishing the rifle for a long time, possibly trying to carry it with you for a long time, even at home. Often, by keeping the gun with you for a long time, you will also discover ways to carry it with as little fatigue as possible, maximizing the effectiveness of your training. If you want to give extra value to your training, try to carry a heavier weapon than the one you are going to use, so that you will find it easier in the actual operating conditions.

These are some of the exercises that I think can best prepare someone to withstand the stress of this type of event.

This is a non-exhaustive list, based on my personal experience alone. It will certainly be best to consult an expert in athletic training.

The golden rule is “always be in shape, and intensify preparation around events”.

It goes without saying that if a person is out of shape, 3 weeks will not prepare him. Even a physically fit person will find these MILSIM events quite demanding.
